Mon 9th. June 2008 Our Post Office closed
We have lost our POST OFFICE after 224 years it closed on
Monday 9th of June 2008 at 1pm.
We had a post house at The Angel Hotel before that! There is a postcard with a twopenny blue stamp on it and a Wangford Postmark, so we had a sorting office here in 1840. The earliest letter we have found was dated 1784. Before that The Earls of Stradbroke had their Mail sent up from London by mail coach to The Angel and would send a servant into Wangford to pick it up. Only the railway stopped us from having a general Post & Sorting Office, it was built but the line from Ipswich was continued on from Halesworth to Beccles and the sorting office went there. Our new General Post Office became just a shop. We still sorted local mail in Wangford until 1972 when we lost our local Postmen.
With the loss of income from the Post Office the shop could have problems
So it is a case of
USE IT OR LOSE IT
Postal Assistant Gillian who's grandfather was one of our last local Postmen
and Karen our last Post Mistress.
I am certain that everyone in Wangford wishes to thank them both
for the wonderful service they have given us.

Hullo to all in Wangford:
My name is James Hatch and I am writing a history blog on my old home village of Cookham. At present I am doing a story on Gilbert Spencer, who at the later part of his life spent some time in your village.

This picture here, we have no idea where it was painted. Has anyone in Wangford have any idea?
If you know contact the webmaster.
